Environmental education is a process that aims to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, values, and experiences necessary to understand and address environmental issues, ultimately fostering responsible and sustainable behaviors. Environmental education helps students understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment, builds knowledge and skills necessary to address complex environmental issues, as well as ways we can take action to keep our environment healthy and sustainable for the future.
Three Principles of Environmental Education:
(i) Awareness and Sensitivity to the Environment: Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment. As a result, individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.
(ii) Interdisciplinary Approach: Interdisciplinary refers to the combination of two or more academic disciplines into one. Today, we have so many social problems that their solution is not possible in one discipline, therefore, the interaction between different disciplines is needed to solve this problem.
(iii) Active Participation and Problem-Solving: Environmental education should encourage individuals to take responsibility and actively participate in solving environmental issues through conservation efforts, sustainable practices, and informed decision-making.
