Western countries have been using wind energy since the end of the 19th century. Many windmills were erected to pump water. The most important use of wind energy in the west was the pump water in farmlands for irrigation. They also used wind energy to pump water to ranches for different purposes. In countries like the Netherlands, wind energy is still used for pumping water. By 1910 wind turbine generators were producing electricity.
