Basis of Difference	Total Utility	Marginal Utility
Definition	It is the aggregate of satisfaction or utility that a consumer derives from the consumption of multiple units of a specific commodity.	Marginal utility meaning, the change in the total utility of a commodity due to the consumption of an additional unit of a commodity.
Trend	It increases with increment in the number of units consumed.	According to the law of diminishing marginal utility meaning, MU declines with an increase in consumption of a particular commodity.
Expression	TUN = MU1 + MU2 + MU3 ... MUN	MU = TUN – TUN-1
End result	The total utility does increase, but as diminishing results as each unit are added to the mix.	Marginal Utility also increases with diminishing results, which may also go negative or zero at some point.
