I. Types of inequalities in social life of India: There are various kinds of inequalities in our social life:

(i) There is inequality between the rich and the poor, inequality of income or money.

(ii) There is inequality of growth between different states, and between different regions within a state. 

(iii) There are inequalities among upper castes, lower castes and so-called the untouchables.

(iv) There is inequality between men and women, and women often have to face difficulties that men do not. 

(v) There is inequality between the literate and the illiterate.

Conclusions: All these inequalities go against the democratic system of government. Democracy implies equality for all citizens without any discrimination on the basis of sex, caste, religion, class, language, etc.

II. Inequalities pose a serious challenge to democracy: The existence of these inequalities poses a serious challenge to Indian democracy and works to disrupt our system.

(i) All those who belong to weaker groups, the poor, the illiterate, unemployed, backward classes, become soft targets.

(ii) Political interests join hands with anti- social elements. The fabric of a civilized democratic society comes under threat. 

(iii) They are further exploited by vested interests to promote their narrow political ambitions.

(iv) These are treated as vote-banks. Vote banks are like making a mockery of democracy.
