A constitution is a collection of laws according to which the administration of the country is run. It is the source of power and authority of government. Every country has its own constitution. The features of Indian Constitution are:

(i) Written and Lengthy Constitution: Indian Constitution is a written and lengthy Constitution having all the details.

(ii) Democratic Government: Ours is a democratic setup. The government is elected by the citizens of India. The representatives form the government and run the country.

(iii) Federal System: We have a federal system in our country. By federal system, we mean that the Constitution distributes powers between the state and the centre. There are three lists of subjects namely-Central List, State List and Concurrent List. But in India, the Centre is more powerful than the states. Hence our federal system is quasi-federal.

(iv) Free and Independent Judiciary: here is a provision for a free and independent judiciary in the Constitution. The executive does not control the judiciary.

(v) Secular State: Indian Constitution proclaims India as a secular state. By secular state we mean that the Government does not favour any particular religion. Citizens are free in religious matters.

(vi) Universal Adult Franchise: In India we have universal adult franchise. Every citizen having attained the age of 18 years has a right to vote.

(vii) Fundamental Right: The Constitution of India guarantees certain fundamental rights to the citizens of India. These rights are essential for the welfare and progress of the citizens.
