The population of India started growing at a faster rate in the last century. The population of India grew only by one and a half times, which is later half it quickened and recorded a three fold increase to 102.70 crores at the beginning of 2001 from 23.60 crore in 1901.

There are three factors which can change the rise of population. Birth rate, death rate and migration. The main cause of the high growth rate of population is the widening gap between birth rate and the death rate. After independence the death rate has declined at a much faster rate. The death rate declined from 42.6 (per thousand) to 8.7 (per thousand).

The deaths rate has fallen because after controlling epidemics like plague etc. and increasing public health measures and advance medical technology during the last three decades.
