Contributions by Taylor:
F.W. Taylor is one of the founders (the other two are Max Weber and Henry Fayol) of classical thought/classical theory of management. He suggested a scientific approach to management also called scientific management theory. Frederick Winslow Taylor, well-known as the founder of scientific management, was the first to recognize and emphasise the need for adopting a scientific approach to the task of managing an enterprise.
(i) Taylor pioneered a new and efficient system in order to increase production.
(ii) His contributions are well acknowledged in reshaping and making the factory system of production .
(iii) He is known for coinage of the term “Scientific Management” in his article “The Principles of Scientific Management” which was published in the year 1911.
(iv) He wrote a popular book named , “Shop Floor” after being fired from Bethlehem Steel Company
Contribution of Henry Fayol :
(i) Henri Fayol is also known as the “Father of General Management” .
(ii) Fayol’s administrative theory focuses on managerial efficiency by controlling the production costs .
(iii) He was the first person to identify four functions of Management – Planning , Organizing , Directing and Controlling .
(iv) He emphasized on specific activities that the Managers should carry out namely – Plan , Organize , Command , Co-ordinate and Control .
(v) He suggested that all the activities of an industrial enterprise should be possibly divided into various sections , namely – Technical , Commercial , Financial , Security , Accounting and Managerial .
(vi) The principles suggested by him were evolved on the basis of his personal experiences
