Contribution of:
(1) Guiseppe Mazzini: was a great revolutionary of Italy. He is regarded as the spiritual force behind the movement for Italian unification. He started the movement known as 'Young Italy'. Revolutionaries like Garibaldi were his companions. Mazzini inspired the youth to fight for freedom and unification of Italy. But Mazzini and his 'Young Italy' failed to achieve unification. But his efforts inspired the people for the unification of Italy. Because of Mazzini's efforts Cavour was able to achieve the unification of Italy.
(2) Garibaldi: was known as the "Physical Force or the Sword of Italy". He, with Mazzini, launched the 'Young Italy' Movement for the unification of Italy. He invoked the Sardinian Sevylors to revolt in 1835 but the action, however, failed. In 1848, he along with Mazzini overthrew the Papal authority over Rome and declared it to be a republic. In 1860 his 'Red Shirt' defeated Austria to secure the independence of Naples and Sicily, which later on joined Sardinia. In this way, Garibaldi's contribution to achieve the unification of Italy is also unforgettable.
(3) Count Cavour: is known as the Bismarck of Italy. He became Prime Minister of Sardinia in 1852. He took the initiative of uniting Italy under the leadership of Sardinia. He entered the Crimean War in 1853-56 to gain the support of Britain and France. He entered into an alliance with Napoleon III of France and went to war with Austria Austria was ousted from Lombardy which was taken over by Sardinia. Before his death, he had unified the whole of Italy under Sardinia with the exception of Venetia and Rome. The real credit for the unification and liberation of Italy goes to Count Cavour.
