Differentiation between the developed and the less developed countries: All the countries of the world are categorized into two classes.
(a) The developed and less developed (or developing). This classification is based on the level of economic progress of the countries.

1. The countries which started on the path of industrialization long back and have now reached the optimum level are grouped as developed countries. | 1. The less developed countries on the other hand are those countries in which industrialization is at a lower level. |
2. These countries are highly industrialised into the post-industrial stage. | 2. These countries have limited access to modern technology due to shortage of capital. |
3. These are rich countries and have high per capita income; and have excelled the less developed countries not only in the domain of production but also in the sectors of education, health services and the control of population growth. | 3. The per capita income of the people in less developed countries is low and the standard of living of the majority of people is poor. Poverty, illiteracy, high birth rate as well as death rate, high infant mortality rate, malnutrition and poor malnutrition and poor health services are the symptoms of the less developed countries of the world today. |
4. Examples: The USA, Canada, the countries of the Western Europe (such as U.K., France, Germany etc.) and Japan from Asia form this category. | 4. Examples: The countries of the Third World (i.e. Latin America, Africa and Asia (without Japan) are usually included in less developed categories of countries. |
