The Indian National Congress lay emphasis on the following important points:
(1) Democratic Socialism: Every attempt shall be made to establish democratic socialism. Political democracy has no meaning when there is no economic equality. Hence, every effort shall be made to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor.
(2) Secularism: The Congress promises to uphold the ideals of secularism. There shall be no discrimination between citizens on grounds of religious faith of any person. Equal respect shall be shown to all the religions.
(3) Agricultural and Industrial Growth: In order to increase agricultural growth the Congress lays emphasis on the expansion of the irrigational potential. In order to step up industrial growth much emphasis shall be laid on tapping new sources of energy and on increasing production. It aims to give a fillup to agro- based industries.
(4) Ending Poverty: All possible efforts shall be made to alleviate poverty. Emphasis shall be laid on the expansion of rural employment. Small landholders shall be helped and efforts shall be made to provide employment to at least one person in a family.
(5) Friendly Relations with Foreign Countries: In the foreign sphere, the Congress wants to establish friendly relations with all countries.
(6) Encouraging Foreign Investment: For rapid economic development of the country and improving India's foreign currency resources the Congress gives encouragement to foreign investments.
