The nature or characteristics of Pressure Groups are as follows:

(1) Effective in Democratic States: Pressure groups are more effective in democratic and highly industrialized states. In dictatorship, they neither exist nor do they have any influence.

(2) Common Interest: A pressure group is organized for the promotion of some common interests. They tried to safeguard the interest of its members. These interests can be social, economic, moral or religious.

(3) Formal and informal organization: Pressure groups are groups of persons, organized for the achievement of definite aims. These can be formal and informal. Formal groups have a constitution, an assembly and an executive committee. The assembly takes decisions and the executive executes or implements those decisions. In an informal group there is neither assembly nor executive committees; a few prominent and influential persons work for the group.

(4) Organization of Non-Government People: Another characteristic of pressure groups is that these are groups of non government people. They do not indulge in controversies regarding administration, they are busy in the promotion of their interests.

(5) To influence public policy: Pressure groups influence government policies and decisions for the protection of their interests. They pressurize the government to frame policies which favor their interests through posters, books, radio and television etc.
