The features of Indian Constitution are as under:
1. Written and large Constitution: Indian Constitution is a written and large constitution having all the details.
2. Democratic Government: We have democratic set up in our country. The Government is elected by the citizens of India. These representatives form the Government and run the country.
3. Free and Independent Judiciary: The Indian Constitution provides for an independent judiciary. The Judiciary has been made independent of the Executive as well as the Legislature. The Judges give impartial justice.
4. Universal Adult Franchise: The Constitution provides for Universal Adult Franchise. Every Indian who is 18 years of age or more is entitled to caste his/her vote.
5. Parliamentary Government: Indian Constitution provides for a parliamentary form of government. The President is the nominal head of the state. In actual practice the government is run by the Prime Minister and other members of the Council of Ministers.
6. Federal System: We have a federal system in our country. In the federal system powers of government are distributed between the states and center.
There are three lists of subjects namely: Central List, State List, and Concurrent List. But in India, the center is more powerful than the states. Hence, our federal system is quasi-federal.
7. Fundamental Rights: The Constitution of India guarantees six fundamental rights to every citizen. These are Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to Freedom of Religion, Cultural and Educational Rights, Right to Constitutional Remedies.
