I. Definitions: According to Ramsay Muni a nation may be defined as a body of people who feel themselves to be nationally linked together by certain affinities which are so strong for them to live happily together, they are dissatisfied when disunited and cannot tolerate subjection to the people who do not share the same ties.
According to Burgess, "nation is a population of ethnic unity inhabiting a territory of goegraphical unity. Garner has said, "A nation is a culturally homogeneous social group which is at once conscious and tenacious of its unity of psychic life and expression."
We can conclude from these definitions that a nation is a group of people who feel bound together by certain ties of common race, language, customs and habits and separate from other people bound together on similar ties and conscious of their separate identity.
II. Elements of Nation:
1. Common Race: People belonging to a common race feel themselves one and they cannot easily live with other people. They try to maintain their separate identity.
2. Common Language: A common language is a medium of communication, it enables the people to express their culture and ideas in common literature. Thus persons come closer.
3. Common Religion: People having faith in a common religion consider themselves one. Thus common religion is an important element of a nation.
4. Common History: The persons having a common history have a national feeling of oneness.
5. Common Culture: Common culture also is a strong force of unity and helps in formation of nationality.
6.Common Political Aspiration: The nation is regarded by some people as the principle of nationality.
All the factors mentioned above help in the growth of a nationality. Hence these factors are the elements of a nation.
